Three University of Hawaii athletic teams have been honored by the NCAA with public recognition awards for academic performance.
The women’s golf, tennis and soccer teams ranked in the top 10 percent of their sports in the most recent Academic Progress Rate report, the NCAA said Wednesday. It was the most teams UH has had honored in one year.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention.
The most recent APR rates include the 2016-17 academic year, the NCAA said.
Brown University led all Division I schools with 20 of its teams earning public recognition awards.
HPU women fourth in final rankings
The Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team finished the season as No. 4 team in the country in the final 2018 Oracle/ITA Division II Women’s Tennis Rankings, which were released on Wednesday.
The Sharks made it to the NCAA Division II semifinals, where they fell 5-4 to West Florida.
Barry (Fla.), the NCAA Division II Champion, is the No. 1 team after finishing the season 28-0. West Florida finished No. 2, with Columbus State (Ga.) at No. 3. Lynn (Fla.) rounded out the top five behind HPU.
Academy of Art (No. 10), Azusa Pacific (No. 15) and Point Loma (No. 30) join HPU as PacWest members in the final rankings.
Individually, Sharks seniors Lena Lutzeier and Lara Meccico finished the season as the top two singles players in the country. With the rankings, Lutzeier and Meccico each earn All-American honors. Fellow senior Oceane Adam finished the season as the No. 21-ranked player. In doubles, Adam and Lutzeier were the No. 11 pairing in the country, while Meccico and senior Barbora Kijasova were ranked No. 31.
Kapeliela named first team All-PacWest
Hawaii Pacific first baseman Christian Kapeliela was named to the 2018 All-PacWest Conference baseball team, it was announced on Wednesday.
The senior from Castle High ranked second in the PacWest with a .407 batting average, 70 hits and 15 doubles.
Baldwin High’s Haloa Dudoit of Concordia also made the first team as a shortstop.
Philip Steering of Hawaii Hilo made the second team as a first baseman.
California Baptist’s Andrew Bash was named the PacWest Player of the Year, while Point Loma’s Garrett Irvin was selected both the Pitcher of the Year and the Freshman of the Year. Point Loma’s Adam Rios and Dixie State’s Jake Davison were honored as the Co-Defensive Players of the Year, while Azusa Pacific’s Isaiah Carranza was the Newcomer of the Year. APU’s Paul Svagdis was voted the PacWest Coach of the Year.

Local surfers eliminated in Brazil
Hawaii surfers Ezekiel Lau, Sebastian Zietz and John John Florence were all eliminated in Round 4 at the Oi Rio Men’s Pro in Saquarema, Rio de Janiero, Brazil on Wednesday.
Lau and Zietz were both knocked out in Heat 3 by Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, while Florence was eliminated by Brazil’s Yago Dora.
Hawaii’s Carissa Moore was eliminated on the women’s side in the quarterfinals. Australia’s Stephanie Gilmore took home the title over America’s Lakey Peterson.
