A 49-year-old man has died from injuries he sustained Thursday after falling about 30 feet while hiking at Ahuimanu Trail.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Fred Patricio Jr. of Honolulu. The cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries.
Firefighters responded to a report of an injured hiker later identified as Patricio at 11:08 a.m. Thursday. The Honolulu Fire Department said bystanders were performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him when firefighters arrived.
The department’s Air 1 helicopter airlifted Patricio to a landing zone at Ahuimanu Elementary School where Emergency Medical Services administered advanced lifesaving treatment.
Paramedics transported him in critical condition to Castle Medical Center where he died Thursday.
His only daughter, Jaylicia Patricio- Young, 25, said hiking was her father’s passion.
Originally from Kauai, Patricio moved to Oahu in 2011 and became involved in Oahu Search & Rescue, a nonprofit organization that helps find lost hikers.
His daughter said, “He always thought of others first. He always went out of his way for other people.”
Patricio, known as “Freddie” to family and friends, was an Army veteran. He visited children battling illnesses at Shriners Hospital and Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children while dressed up in a Spider-Man costume to help cheer them up.
“He said it was worth every bit to see the kids smile,” said his daughter.
Patricio also was a volunteer with Team Rubicon, a nonprofit group that assists communities affected by natural disasters. He recently helped flood victims on Kauai and was set to go to Puerto Rico at the end of the month to assist communities devastated by Hurricane Maria.
Patricio-Young said her father’s death is surreal because he always was equipped with safety gear during his hikes. “He was the ultimate safety person on hikes.”
She said her father will be best remembered for “living life like there’s no tomorrow.”
A GoFundMe account has been created to assist Patricio’s family with funeral expenses. To make a donation, go to gofundme.com/freddies-services.
