Emergency responders were unable to revive a 61-year-old California man who was pulled unconscious today from waters off a beach in Manele Bay, Lanai.

The Maui Fire Department said in a news release that firefighters were called at 12:28 p.m. to Hulopoe Beach. When they arrived at 12:42 p.m., they found bystanders performing CPR on the man.

Firefighters continued lifesaving efforts until paramedics arrived, shortly thereafter.

The man, who was visiting from Escondido, Calif., could not be resuscitated.

He had been swimming at the beach, and was part of a Maui tour group that was visiting Lanai.

A nearby swimmer noticed the man floating unresponsive and pulled him to shore.

This was the 19th water-related fatality in Maui County so far this year. Of those, 18 occurred in the ocean and one in a stream.
