University of Hawaii basketball coach Eran Ganot said he expects to fill two vacancies on his coaching staff in “the next couple weeks.”
Marlon Stewart, who served as defensive coordinator and post players coach, is joining Oregon State as director of operations. Todd Okeson is leaving to pursue other opportunities.
“These guys are family,” Ganot said. “Their families are family. They’ve been great. They’ve been awesome for us. They’ll be family forever. We appreciate what they’ve done for us, and we’ll continue to follow them from afar. We’ll always be there for them, and I think it’s vice versa.”
Ganot said Stewart has expressed a goal of becoming a Pac-12 assistant coach.
“To get closer to that is exciting for him and his family,” Ganot said. “He’s got the Northwest ties, obviously, being from Seattle.”
Stewart was an assistant coach at Montana before joining the Rainbow Warriors last July.
“There are a lot of things that made sense for him at this point,” Ganot said. “We’re excited, and wish him the best of luck. He’s been great, and he’ll continue to be great.”
Okeson completed his second season as director of operations, a position with duties ranging from overseeing academics to marketing. He and wife Natalie have three children.
“He’s looking at other things that can work for him and his family,” Ganot said. “When you’ve got three (children) now, there are some challenges here. … He’s made a great impact on our program. He’s universally well respected. He’s such a great family guy.”
UH already has posted the job notifications.
Ganot said the new hires will not necessarily have the same skill sets as their predecessors. “It’s like when you lose a senior to graduation, you can’t say, ‘I’m going to find the exact same person,’ ” Ganot said. “We’re not all exactly the same.”
He said he is searching for a coach with “great” character and talent who is “excited” about coaching in Hawaii. “We’ve never wavered,” Ganot said of the criteria.
The Rainbow Warriors will report ahead of the July 2 start of the second summer session. Ganot said he wants a full staff in place at least two weeks before that. Adam Jacobsen and John Montgomery are entering their fourth season as full-time assistant coaches. Ganot said that “when our guys come back, we want to be ready to roll.”
“We’re sad to see (Stewart and Okeson) go,” Ganot said. “Sometimes you’ll lose some great people, and then you’ll hire great people. We’ll celebrate them as much as we can before they go. In the meantime, we’ll work on bringing in some great people, as well.”
