Hawaii sophomore Petra Melounova and Oregon senior Alyssa Tobita of Mililani lost their first-round matches in the NCAA Women’s Singles Championship on Wednesday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Tobita, ranked 42nd in the nation, closed her career with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to No. 19 Carla Touly of Florida State at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. Tobita, a three-time state champion at Mililani, ended the season at 18-12 and earned Oregon’s first berth into the individual tournament since 2006.
Melounova, ranked 73rd, fell to No. 21 Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 to snap her eight-match winning streak.
After dropping the first set, the Rainbow Wahine sophomore fell behind 3-1 in the second before winning the next five games to force a decisive third set.
Talaba held serve to open the set and Melounova fired three winners in a row to take a 40-0 lead in her first service game. But Talaba rallied and went up a break when Melounova’s shot on the deciding point went into the net. Talaba rolled through the remainder of the set and Melounova, the Big West player of the year, ended the season at 14-4.
UH sailing finishes 14th at nationals
The University of Hawaii sailing team concluded its season on Wednesday, finishing 14th at the 2018 ICSA Sperry Women’s National Semifinals in Norfolk, Va.
The Rainbow Wahine started the day in 17th place, and despite moving up three spots, were unable to make the nine-team cutoff to advance to the finals.
Meister advances in Chile
Hawaii’s Torrey Meister has advanced to the fifth round at the Heroes de Mayo Iquique Pro in La Puenta, Chile.
Meister advanced throught Rounds 1 and 2 by winning his heats. Meister then finished second in Round 3 behind Brazil’s Jeronimo Vargas, and second again in Round 4 behind Australia’s Luke Hynd, allowing him to qualify for the next round. Meister posted a score of 10.25, just shy of Hynd’s score of 10.55.
Gaspar named second team All-American
Hawaii Hilo’s Bailey Gaspar was named to the D2CCA All-America team on Wednesday, becoming just the third Hilo softball player ever named to a D2CCA All-America squad.
The third baseman from Vancouver, Wash., was a second team All-America selection. In her senior season, she posted a .404 average with ten doubles, 15 home runs and 54 RBIs, setting single season program records with her home run and RBI totals. She concluded her Vulcan career as the program leader in home runs (35), second in runs scored (119) and walks (84), and third in RBIs (145) and doubles (33).
She was an All-Pacific West Conference first team selection this season, and was named the UH Hilo Female Athlete of the Year.
