Ho and Manuel win Round 1 heats
Two Hawaii female surfers won their Round 1 heats today in the Corona Bali Protected Women’s Pro in Keramas, Bali.
Coco Ho (14.00) and Malia Manuel (15.00) each advanced straight into Round 3, while second-place finishes in Round 1 heats for Tatiana Weston-Webb (Kauai-raised but representing Brazil) and Carissa Moore took them into Round 2. In Round 2, Weston-Webb defeated American Courtney Conlogue 12.00 to 9.00, while Moore outlasted New Zealand’s Paige Hareb 12.83 to 10.67.
Weston-Webb and Ho surf in one of the four three-person Round 3 heats, while Moore and Manuel are paired in another heat.
Surf permitting, the event continues Thursday.
HPU women take top PWC tennis honors
Hawaii Pacific University senior tennis player Lena Lutzeier was named PacWest player of the year and head coach Lauren Conching coach of the year as announced by the conference on Tuesday.

Joining Lutzeier on the first team in singles was Lara Meccico. On the second team in singles was Oceane Adam. In doubles, the pairs of Lutzeier and Adam and Meccico and Barbora Kijasova were selected to the first team.
The Sharks reached the semifinals of the NCAA Division II tournament for a third straight season earlier this month.
Vulcans men’s tennis receives PWC awards
Coach Tina McDermott took the Pacific West Conference men’s tennis coach of the year honors and Alessandro Giuliato was named freshman of the year on Tuesday.
In addition, Giuliato and Vaclav Slezak received first-team singles and doubles honors. Fellow freshman Chun En Wu was named to the PacWest third team.
The Vulcans finished the season a program-best 17-3, which included a first-round victory in the NCAA Division II tournament.
Parker is Gatorade Hawaii Baseball POY
Stone Parker of Kailua High School was named the 2017-18 Gatorade Hawaii baseball player of the year on Tuesday, as announced by the company’s Chicago office. He’s the first recipient of the award from Kailua High School.
The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence and high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field. Now a finalist for the Gatorade national baseball player of the year award, Parker joins an alumni association of past state award winners that includes Derek Jeter, David Price, Clayton Kershaw and Kris Bryant.
Parker, a 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-handed pitcher and first baseman, posted a 6-1 record on the mound with a 0.69 ERA and 66 strikeouts this season, in addition to batting .289 with 10 RBIs. He helped lead the Surfriders to a fourth-place finish in the HHSAA Division I state championships.
A member of the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, Parker has donated time to help youth baseball players at Hawaii baseball clinics. A “B” average student in the classroom, Parker has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball on a scholarship to the University of Kansas.
Ikei wins wrestling gold
Representing the United States of America, Kaiser High School’s Tiare Ikei defeated Venezuelan Maria Jose Mosquera Rojas 10-0 in the 49kg gold-medal match on Saturday in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
Ikei scored with two counter offensive takedowns and three exposures over her opponent as the bout was stopped at the 1:07 mark in the first period.
Ikei was one of six USA members who won an individual championship and helped Team USA reach 205 points, good enough to win the Cadet Pan-American Championship team title.
Her victory gives her a berth into the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, later this year.
Hockenberry to compete in DOD Games
U.S. Navy Personnel Specialist, Senior Chief Petty Officer Raina Hockenberry of Kalihi will join more than 250 injured, seriously wounded and ill service members and veterans at the 2018 Department of Defense Warrior Games, on Friday through June 9 at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.
During the nine days of competition, Hockenberry will compete against athletes from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, Special Operations Command, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom in sports such as cycling, swimming, rowing and powerlifting.
Hockenberry was picked for team Navy after the Wounded Warrior Trials concluded in February in Florida.
150th Japan-Hawaii judo banquet set
The Hawaii judo community will host a banquet to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Japanese immigrants to Hawaii on June 9 at the Japanese Cultural Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Among the dignitaries from Japan who will be in attendance: Tadahiro Nomura, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, and Haruki Uemura, president of the Kodokan (founding school of judo).
