Parked cars and beachgoers were seen along Kaelepulu Drive near Lanikai in Kailua. The city will restrict parking in Lanikai for the three-day Kamehameha Day holiday weekend in its continuing effort to balance public access to nearby beaches with public safety for the community.

The city will restrict parking in Lanikai for the three-day Kamehameha Day holiday weekend in its continuing effort to balance public access to nearby beaches with public safety for the community.

No parking on all Lanikai streets and shoulders will be allowed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday through Monday.

Temporary “sawhorse” type signs will be placed on streets in Lanikai. The Honolulu Police Department has also agreed to provide an electronic messaging board at the entrance of Lanikai on Mokulua Drive to warn motorists of the parking restrictions.

However, under an agreement with the Lanikai Association and the city Department of Transportation Services, this additional warning may not be available for future three-day holidays.

Those wishing to access Lanikai beach or the Lanikai Pillbox Trail over the three-day weekend may walk, bike, take TheBus Route 70 Lanikai, or get dropped off.
