Ten Hawaii students were among 3,500 winners of the National Merit Scholarship financed by U.S. colleges and universities. Officials from the 178 participating public and private colleges and universities selected their winners from a pool of finalists who plan to attend their institutions. The scholarships are worth $500-$2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.
The Hawaii winners are:
>> Justin R. Abe of Punahou School, whose probable career field is medicine. Abe’s scholarship is funded by the University of Southern California.
>> Bradley Aoki of Punahou School, whose probable career field is business. Aoki’s scholarship is funded by the University of Southern California.
>> Keola K. Ching of Kamehameha Schools, Kapalama campus, whose probable career field is medicine. Ching’s scholarship is funded by Southern Methodist University.
>> Lucas K. Chun of Hawaii Baptist Academy, whose probable career field is computer engineering. Chun’s scholarship is funded by Marquette University.
>> Ana F. Danko of ʻIolani School, whose probable career field is cardiology. Danko’s scholarship is funded by the University of Southern California.
>> Nathan D. Hue of ʻIolani School, whose probable career field is medicine. Hue’s scholarship is funded by the University of Southern California.
>> Bethany Lum of ʻIolani School, whose probable career field is medicine. Lum’s scholarship is funded by the University of Southern California.
>> Julia Oehlers of Sacred Hearts Academy, whose probable career field is biology. Oehlers’ scholarship is funded by the University of Oklahoma.
>> Arupa Sharma Poudyal of ʻIolani School, whose probable career field is law. Poudyal’s scholarship is funded by the University of Texas at Dallas.
>> Winston Wei of ʻIolani School, whose probable career field is science. Wei’s scholarship is funded by the University of Southern California.
This is the third round of National Scholarship Award winners for 2018. In May the National Merit Scholarship Corporation named recipients of the National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, and in April it announced the winners of the Corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships. In July it will announce additional winners of college-sponsored scholarships. By the end of the year, it estimates it will have awarded over $31 million in scholarships to about 7,500 scholars across the nation.
