Honolulu police detectives said Friday they are investigating Thursday’s kitchen fire at Alicia’s Market in Kalihi as first-degree arson while Honolulu fire investigators work to determine the cause of the two-alarm blaze.
An owner of Alicia’s Market used an extinguisher and then a garden hose to help firefighters contain the fire to the kitchen, Honolulu fire officials said.
Residences on the second floor of the building at 267 Mokauea St. were evacuated, and no one was injured, HFD said. Firefighters received the first alarm at 4:56 a.m. and arrived at 5:02 a.m. to find light smoke coming out of the roof vent to the business. The fire was brought under control at 6:02 a.m.

An Aina Haina food pantry damaged by the mid-April flood reopened its doors to the community Thursday. Angel Network Charities, owned and operated by Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church, is the Hawaii Foodbank’s largest food distributing agency in East Oahu and serves more than 2,500 people monthly. Thanks to food and monetary donations from the community, its shelves were stocked with perishable and nonperishable items.
