The University of Hawaii basketball team went near and far to complete its coaching staff with Monday’s hiring of Jabari Trotter as assistant coach and Jesse Nakanishi as director of operations.
The past two seasons, Trotter was an assistant coach at Dartmouth, his alma mater. He was a combo guard for the New Hampshire-based Ivy League school before playing professionally in Ireland. Trotter replaces Marlon Stewart, who resigned after one season at UH to become the director of operations at Oregon State.
Nakanishi is a Kamehameha Schools graduate who coached at Hawaii Pacific from 2011 through 2017, including four seasons as associate head coach. Nakanishi, who has a master’s degree from UH, was Seattle University’s director of operations this past academic year. He replaces Todd Okeson, who left to pursue other opportunities.
UH coach Eran Ganot said Trotter, who grew up in Northridge, Calif., has been an effective recruiter on the West Coast.
Recruiting “is something he excels in,” Ganot said of Trotter. “I think he can help us. He’s a really hard worker. A lot of people gravitate toward him (because of) his personality, his passion, his energy. You’re always trying to identify and attract talent. He’s got the two areas you need in terms of recruiting and player development.”
Ganot said Trotter’s responsibilities include helping associate head coach Adam Jacobsen tutor the guards, as well as overseeing rebounding and being involved with scouting and defense.
“He loves being on the floor,” Ganot said. “He loves developing guys. When you talk about talent upgrade, you’re talking about recruiting and player development. When you can be good at both, and fit in with the rest of our staff and with the current players and players we have coming in, I think there’s a lot to be excited about.”
Nakanishi’s job title calls for monitoring academics, overseeing travel and scheduling, coordinating camps and helping Ganot in fundraising. But Ganot said Nakanishi’s coaching background will be useful in other areas.
“That position as director of ops, you wear a lot of hats,” Ganot said. “He’s worn a lot of hats. He’s been on the floor. He’s recruited. He’s had a hand in every aspect of building a program. He knows Hawaii. He knows what we’re trying to do.”
Ganot said Nakanishi’s Hawaii tie is a “bonus, but I think it’s a great bonus.”
“His eyes light up when he talks about the University of Hawaii,” Ganot said. “He’s excited to be here. He’ll do a great job.”
Ganot said filling the staff at this time provides ample preparation. The Rainbow Warriors begin training on July 2, the start of UH’s second summer session.
