A 1-year-old boy died Saturday night after being found unconscious in Waikiki in a pond near the Kapiolani Park bandstand, authorities said.

The child was reported missing at about 7:20 p.m., police said.

Emergency Medical Services said they responded to a call just before 8 p.m. Saturday to a 1-year-old who was found unresponsive in water near the bandstand.

Paramedics treated the child and transported him to an area hospital in critical condition.

Police said he was pronounced dead at about 8:55 p.m., and apparently drowned.

There are no signs of foul play, but the case has been passed to the Homicide Detail as is standard procedure, police said.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office has opened a case, but could not provide any details today as to the cause of death.
