Vulcans sign 11 for soccer
Gene Okumura, the head coach for the Hawaii Hilo women’s soccer team, announced the signing of 11 players for the upcoming season on Wednesday.
The group includes four transfers and seven freshmen.
Former Washington State player Emele Chaddock is the lone Division I transfer. Also joining the Vulcans as transfers are goalkeeper Bailey Cahill and midfielder Janelle Schwartz from Santa Rosa Junior College and forward Blayne Shoffit of Santa Barbara CC.
Jodi Lillie (Mililani), Brende Yoshizumi (Kamehameha), Piper Collado (Pearl City), Kayla Kunihisa (Maryknoll), and Kyanna Torres-Kaiwi (Lahainaluna) are five local products who will join the Vulcans as freshmen. Alexis Berlin (San Ramon/California High School) and Taylor Hornburg (Exeter) are the other freshmen, both from California.
UH swim team earns academic honors
The University of Hawaii placed 12 student-athletes on the College Swimming &Diving Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America Team, the school announced on Wednesday.
Eight female athletes and four male athletes were selected from Hawaii. On the women’s side were seniors Kate Santilena, Madison Sthamann and Franziska Weidner, and underclassmen Phoebe Hines, Jane Ip, Anna Kotonen, Lucia Lassman and Jami Stone. On the men’s side were Jonas Gutzat, Adam Kealiher, Olli Kokko and David Springhetti.
Hawaii was one of seven schools not in the NCAA Power Five conferences to place eight or more selections. Other such schools to achieve this standing were Harvard and Yale.
