Puna fire causes $145,000 in damage and destroys structure

Fire destroyed a two-story structure and caused $145,000 in damage Saturday night in Puna, Hawaii island firefighters said.

Firefighters initially responded to a report of a suicidal male threatening to burn himself and a structure shortly after 9 p.m. on Maui Road near Mountain View.

While firefighters waited for police to clear the area of reported weapons, officers determined it was too dangerous to approach the burning 30-by-30-foot structure. Firefighters brought the fire under control by 9:45 p.m.

Based on initial reports, firefighters searched for two potential individuals inside, but could not locate any remains and turned the scene over to police.

The owner of the property is unknown. It was unclear if the structure was legally built, firefighters said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
