With the start of classes just five weeks away, Susie Osborne, co-founder and head of Kua o ka La Public Charter School in Puna, is desperately seeking a campus in Hilo to temporarily house her elementary school students.
Osborne had to scramble to find alternative locations for her students to finish up the last 10 days of the school year in May. Classes were temporarily held at the New Hope church in Waiakea for elementary students and the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island for middle and high school students.
Osborne plans to keep the older students at the Boys and Girls Club but is searching for a location for approximately 100 younger kids. She said several options could work if portable structures were brought in to hold classes.
In May, Osborne lost both her home and access to the school campus due to the Kilauea eruptions.

4 swimmers rescued at Keawakapu Beach
Maui firefighters and a Maui County Ocean Safety Jet Ski unit rescued four swimmers in distress Sunday at Keawakapu Beach in Kihei.
Rough and windy conditions prevailed as a fire crew found four victims in need of help. Two fire rescue swimmers made contact with the victims, three of whom were hanging onto a rescue tube, while the other was kept afloat on another rescue tube.
Fire personnel remained with the victims until the Jet Ski unit arrived and brought the three back to shore. An Ocean Safety lifeguard helped the fourth person back to shore.
None of the individuals were injured, and all declined medical attention.
“The conditions in that area can change really quickly on a typical tradewind day,” Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsuhiro said.
Yatsuhiro said two of the victims — a 65-year-old man and a 51-year-old woman — were from California.
