A state judge on Kauai handed a 21-year-old Waimea man two life prison terms Thursday for a 2016 execution-style murder in Hanapepe.
Koma K. Texeira Jr. will get to serve both life prison terms at the same time and could qualify for release on parole. The Hawaii Paroling Authority will decide when Texeira can be made
eligible.
A jury found him guilty
in March of the murder of 34-year-old Jon Togioka.
Bystanders found
Togioka’s body, which
had multiple gunshot wounds, on Nov. 1, 2016, near Burns Field.
The jurors also found
Texeira guilty of using a firearm to commit the murder, of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition, and eligible for extended-
term sentences.
Circuit Judge Randal
Valenciano sentenced
Texeira to the mandatory life prison term with parole for the murder, an extended term of life prison with
parole for using a firearm to commit the murder and
another extended term of
10 years in prison for possessing a firearm while under indictment for another felony. Valenciano ordered all terms to run at the same time.
At the time of the murder, Texeira was awaiting trial in state court for multiple counts of drug and drug
paraphernalia possession. He pleaded no contest last month.
Valencia sentenced Texeira’s co-defendant, Clayton K. Kona, to five years in prison in May for hindering prosecution and for unlawfully possessing a firearm. Kona, 39, admitted that he hid the gun Texeira used to kill Togioka and lied about it to police.
