HAIKU, Maui >> Gunshots were fired during a home invasion robbery in Haiku Thursday, according to Maui police.
The three adult victims reported that three men wearing hooded sweatshirts, one with a handgun, entered their home at about 10:35 p.m. As the robbers searched the house, one of the victims managed to fire a single round from an AR-15 rifle, nearly wounding one of the intruders. The robbers fired four gunshots as they fled.
No one was hurt during the incident, but one of the victims reported losing $3,000. Witnesses said the robbers fled toward Hana in a black vehicle on Hana Highway.
2 killed in Piilani Highway crash
KIHEI, Maui >> Two people were killed in a crash involving a motorcycle and a van Friday on Piilani Highway in South Maui.
Police said motorcyclist William Kerr Chapman, 42, of Kihei, was headed southbound at about 1:15 p.m. when he collided with a Dodge Caravan that failed to yield while making a left turn onto the highway from East Welakahao Road.
Chapman died at the scene and his passenger sustained critical injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. Neither were wearing helmets, according to police.
The van driver, Tina Louise Hanback, 48, of Kihei, also died at the scene, while a front-seat passenger was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
There have been nine traffic fatalities on Maui this year compared to four at this time last year.
DUI suspect head-butts police officer
A 40-year-old man under arrest for driving under the influence of an intoxicant is facing additional charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer.
The suspect was first arrested at about 11:20 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Piikoi and Kona streets. After his handcuffs were removed at the cell block at Honolulu Police Department headquarters on South Beretania Street, he head-butted an officer and was subsequently arrested for first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, police said.
The officer was not seriously hurt.
