The Honolulu Fire Department continued to battle separate brush fires in Leeward Oahu on Sunday.
In Makaha Valley, where at least 3,000 acres burned, 79 firefighters and 27 trucks helped fight the blaze, which is 30 percent contained. No injuries or damaged structures were reported. In Waianae Valley a fire destroyed about 2,000 acres so far and five farm-type structures. One minor injury was reported; the blaze is 40 percent contained, down from 50 percent.
HFD is ramping up efforts to contain the wildfires with help from federal and state airport firefighters, as well as the state Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, and the military, which is assisting with air drops, fire officials said.
On Saturday the brush fires forced road closures and some Makaha and Waianae residents were evacuated from their homes. There were no road closures or evacuations on Sunday, no reported injuries and no damage to homes, fire officials said Sunday night.
Firefighters extinguish electrical blaze
Firefighters responded Sunday to an electrical fire at the Waikele Center in Central Oahu.
At around 11:20 a.m. 21 firefighters were dispatched to the center at 94-849 Lumiaina St., across from the Waikele Premium Outlets. The Fire Department said the fire was caused by an electrical short but was extinguished upon arrival by a sprinkler system.
