Sean Yamaguchi batted 3-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs and Aukai Kea struck out 10 batters over 5 1/3 innings as Honolulu defeated St. George (Utah) 8-2 at the Little League Majors (11-12) West Regional on Monday in San Bernardino, Calif.
Yamaguchi’s two-run homer highlighted a four-run second inning for Honolulu.
Kea allowed two runs on two hits and two walks. Jace Souza worked the final two-thirds of an inning with two strikeouts.
Honolulu next will face Las Vegas on Thursday at 3 p.m. Both teams are 2-0 in the six-team, double-elimination tournament.
Corpuz, Choi at U.S. Women’s Amateur
Kapolei’s Allisen Corpuz shot a 1-under-par 70 and is tied for 31st after Monday’s first round of stroke-play qualifying for the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Kingston Springs, Tenn.
Honolulu’s Claire Choi is tied for 116th after shooting a 76 at the Golf Club of Tennessee.
Alexa Pano of Lake Worth, Fla., leads the qualifying at 66.
The golfers will play another round of stroke play today, with the top 64 advancing to match play.
Billfish Tournament starts off Kona
Australia’s Moreton Bay Fishing Club tagged and released 100- and 140-pound Pacific blue marlins and a 30-pound short nose spearfish to take the lead after Monday’s first day of the 59th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament off Kona.
Moreton Bay leads the 24-team event with 700 points. Surfside Marina and Kona Game Fishing Club-Osaka are second with 600.
Teams from Africa, Australia, Japan, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the United States are entered in the five-day tournament.
Ten Pacific blue marlin, four short nose spearfish and one ahi were caught Monday.
