Try the latest fare at the new Burger Hale at the International Market Place on Friday and the Hawaii Foodbank gets a taste, too.
Owners Michelle Karr-Ueoka and Wade Ueoka are donating $1 from sandwich sales that day to the food bank. It’s a way of celebrating some new menu choices, including a Hawaiian BBQ Burger with kalua pork and fried onions, three hot dogs (one comes with grilled cheese) and specialties such as Baja Fish Tacos.
Burger Hale opened in June, one of a dozen concepts at The Street food hall in the marketplace. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; the owners will hold a meet-and-greet with customers from 3 to 5 p.m. Call 377-4402.
The promotion comes at a good time — the food bank recently put out an emergency call for donations, as shelves were depleted due to spring floods on Kauai and the ongoing volcanic eruption on Hawaii island.
President Ron Mizutani said Tuesday that community response got the food bank up to an 11-week supply, but donations are still needed. Call 954-7853 or visit hawaiifoodbank.org.

LILIKOI-LYCHEE JOINS HAWAIIAN SUN OHANA
The Hawaiian Sun family of juices has just grown, with a new flavor, lilikoi-lychee, joining old standbys like pineapple-orange, guava nectar and luau punch.
The drink officially debuts at the Made in Hawaii Festival, Friday through Sunday at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center, but the pretty-in-pink cans began showing up in stores this week. Find the new juice at Foodland, Safeway, Walmart and Sam’s Club stores.
FOCUS ON MASALA AT COOKING CLASS
The August “Eat Well for Life” cooking demonstration at Adventist Health Castle will feature Indian tikka masala.
The class takes place at 6 p.m. Aug. 23 in the medical center’s Wellness Auditorium.
Hannah Vernon of Homecooked with Love, a meal-preparation service, will prepare the dish, using a homemade curry paste.
The vegan meal will be served with cilantro chutney, gluten-free garlic naan bread and basmati rice.
