On Friday noon, KHON-2 was the only station still carrying live coverage of Hurricane Lane, a Category 3 weather system aimed directly at Oahu. During the broadcast, Joe Moore and Justin Cruz invited the University of Hawaii’s Alison Nugent, assistant professor with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, to provide insight on all matters “hurricane.” Her in-depth discussions with Cruz for over two hours were so informative that viewers started sending in a host of questions to be answered.

Then at about 4:35 p.m., Moore sent the live feed over to Kathy Muneno, who had the Hurricane Center’s Eric Lau standing by with the latest satellite images of the hurricane being torn apart by wind shear, explaining in detail what we were seeing. Lane was no longer a hurricane, and it was now heading west.

The weight of worry and uncertainty that we all carried through the week due to Hurricane Lane was finally lifted. Good job, KHON.
