I am deeply saddened by the passing of U.S. Sen. John McCain. He served our country with dedication, distinction and honor throughout his adult life.
He served in the Vietnam conflict. He was a prisoner of war for more than five years after his aircraft was shot down. During that time in captivity he endured much. After retirement from the Navy, he pursued a successful political career.
Though he was a Republican, he admirably did what he believed was right — sometimes going against the grain. He was against torture, for he had endured it first-hand. His deciding vote on Obamacare saved it. He worked fairly on immigration. After all, one of his daughters was an adopted Bangladesh orphan.
Former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama, who had defeated him politically, were humbly asked to deliver eulogies. Mahalo nui loa to a great American. RIP!
