In response to Gerry Peters (“Insurers should offer more help,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Aug. 29): It’s important to note that an independent insurance agent can be a valuable resource for consumers looking to understand the coverage that they have, receive competitive quotes on policies they need, and receive information on disaster preparedness/claim filing. Additionally, an independent agent can advise consumers on premium saving credits offered by various carriers for installation of damage-mitigating products such as hurricane clips or shutters.
Consumers can also access the Hawaii Insurance Division website for informational tools available for download, including: “Guide to Hurricane Strengthening for Hawaii Single- Family Residences,” and “My Insurance Doesn’t Cover What?”.
Various industry organizations also regularly participate in disaster preparedness fairs to share this type of information with everyone. Upcoming fairs will be at Ewa Mahiko District Park on Sept. 8 and Manoa Valley District Park on Oct. 20.
