The “Be Prepared” section of the “Storm Extra” supplement included with my newspaper was timely and very informative (Star-Advertiser, Aug. 23) — especially the identification of local radio stations (KSSK AM/FM and KNDI) that are most likely to be broadcasting during islandwide power outages, and the identification of radio stations that will broadcast foreign-language programming during emergencies.
This type of emergency preparedness information should be made available to all newcomers and visitors as soon as they arrive here. Flyers could be given out with agricultural declaration forms on airplanes and placed in hotel rooms to ensure English-speaking and non-English-speaking arrivals are aware of local AM/FM radio and other resources that will be available during emergencies.
The supplement only identified Honolulu radio stations that broadcast in Asian and Pacific Island languages. Radio stations should broadcast in languages for others, including our European and Middle Eastern visitors.
