City crews responded Wednesday night to a sewer overflow that resulted in 32,400 gallons of raw wastewater coming out of a manhole at 1015 N. School St.
Crews were able to recover 775 gallons with a vacuum truck, but about 31,625 gallons went into a storm drain that empties into Kapalama Canal and, eventually, Honolulu Harbor.
The overflow from a 36-inch pipe was discovered at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday and stopped at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the city Department of Environmental Services.
The state Health Department was notified, and warning signs were posted Thursday morning. Due to an islandwide brown-water advisory, water sampling was waived. City crews cleaned, disinfected and deodorized the affected area.
Road to close for utility pole work
The far-right westbound lane of Farrington Highway from the entrance of the Kahe Power Plant to the entrance to Tracks Beach will be closed for several hours today while Hawaiian Electric Co. replaces three utility poles on the mauka side of the highway, according to a statement from HECO.
The work will occur between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Traffic signs, traffic control measures, flagmen and special-duty police officers will help direct motorists during this time.
Joint service to honor nisei veterans
The 13th annual Joint Memorial Service for World War II military units composed primarily of Americans of Japanese ancestry will be held Sept. 30 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
The service, presented by the nonprofit group Nisei Veterans Legacy, honors the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442nd Regimental Combat Team, Military Intelligence Service and 1399 Engineer Construction Battalion.
“Our nisei veterans are a living treasure that we need to honor and appreciate while they’re still around,” said Nisei Veterans Legacy President Wes Deguchi.
Historian and journalist Tom Coffman, who is working on a second book about nisei soldiers, will speak.
This year’s service coincides with the Gannenmono, the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first group of Japanese immigrants to Hawaii.
