An 80-year-old Waikiki man is in stable condition tonight after he apparently drove his car through a second-story parking garage railing and landed on the ground level.

The man, a resident of the Waikiki Skyliner, located at 2415 Ala Wai Boulevard, was in his parking stall and was attempting to leave, when he apparently thought he had the car in reverse, fire Capt. Scot Seguirant said.

Instead, he drove forward, went through the railing and his white Toyota four-door sedan landed nose down with the rear of the car up against the building, he said.

The fire department responded to the 5:55 p.m. alarm and sent four units with 14 personnel.

Firefighters first stabilized the car, then got the man out of the car.

Seguirant said the man was injured, but talking.

Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the man and transported him in stable condition to a hospital.
