Hawaii senior linebacker Jahlani Tavai continues to climb up the record book.
Making the 42nd start of his career, Tavai finished with 11 total tackles against Duquesne to give him 355 total, moving past David Dworsky (1969-71) into third place.
He now trails only Solomon Elimimian (434 tackles) and Levi Stanley (366).
His one tackle for loss moved him into a tie for sixth place with Melila Purcell with 361⁄2 for his career.
PARR LETS IT OUT, THEN LETS IT LOOSE
Duquesne starting quarterback Daniel Parr had to leave the game on a fourth-down play in the first quarter for an unusual reason.
The Dukes senior took a knee after an incomplete pass on third down and threw up near the 30-yard line.
He had to miss the next play, a fourth-and-4 at the UH 34 that the Dukes converted when backup Brett Brumbaugh hit Kellon Taylor for 29 yards.
It was only Brumbaugh’s sixth pass attempt of the season.
Parr jogged back out on the field and completed the drive two plays later with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Nehari Crawford to put Duquesne ahead 7-0.
URSUA’S CENTURY STREAK SNAPPED
Hawaii slotback John Ursua, who began the week leading the nation in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, caught his eighth TD of the season on a 25-yarder from Cole McDonald late in the first quarter.
He added a 7-yard TD late in the fourth quarter but saw his streak of four games with at least 100 yards receiving snapped.
Ursua finished with five receptions for 77 yards to finish under the century mark for the first time this year. He was two games away from tying Greg Salas’ school record of six straight 100-yard receiving games set in 2010.
ISTACHE FEELING THE ALOHA SPIRIT
Duquesne senior cornerback Jonathant Istache had the right celebration for his first-quarter pick of Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald.
Istache became the first player to intercept McDonald this season and kept UH out of the end zone on its opening drive for the first time all year when he picked off a pass in the North end zone.
Running back to the Dukes sideline, he gave the Duquesne visiting section a nice shaka following his second INT of the season.
DEBRITO KICKED OUT OF GAME
Duquesne junior Leandro Debrito was disqualified from the game for targeting in the second quarter.
The defensive back lowered his head and collided helmet-to-helmet with Hawaii running back Fred Holly. The ball came loose, but Holly was ruled down. After an official review, the targeting call was upheld and Debrito’s night was done with 13:46 remaining before halftime.
Debrito is the second opposing player to be kicked out of a game against UH at Aloha Stadium this season for targeting.
Hawaii’s Devan Stubblefield was whistled for a targeting penalty in the second quarter as well, but it was negated after an official’s review.
