Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sat out the entire fourth quarter and still had a career day.
The 2017 Saint Louis alumnus threw for a career-high 387 yards and accounted for a career-best five touchdowns in the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide’s 45-23 victory over then-No. 22 Texas A&M on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Tagovailoa set career highs in passing attempts (30) and completions (22) and tied his best outing of four touchdown passes. His fifth score was on a 1-yard TD run.
The 387 passing yards are the fifth-most in school history. Only Blake Sims (2014) has thrown for more yards at Alabama under head coach Nick Saban.
Tagovailoa threw a 57-yard touchdown pass with 2:01 left in the third quarter and didn’t return to the game with Alabama ahead 45-16 at that point.
Through four games this season, Alabama is outscoring its opponents 148-20 in the first half.
As the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback this season, Tagovailoa has led the Alabama offense to 20 touchdowns in 31 drives. Another two ended with field goals.
Tagovailoa is 17-for-20 passing on third down this season for 372 yards and six TDs. He’s also rushed four times for 36 yards and picked up a first down on each attempt.
Next up for Alabama is Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday at 6 a.m.
Milton named player of the week
Central Florida junior McKenzie Milton won the American Athletic Conference offensive player of the week award for the second time in three games on Monday.
The 2016 Mililani alumnus finished 21-for-32 for 306 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for three more scores in a 56-36 win over Florida Atlantic on Friday.
Milton, who has 10 300-yard passing games and has thrown at least one TD pass in his past 17 outings, matched his career best of six total touchdowns accounted for. It was the first time he rushed for multiple touchdowns in a game.
He finished with 81 rushing yards on 13 carries for a 6.2 average.
The award was the sixth of Milton’s career. He won the conference’s weekly award four times last season when he ended up eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

UCLA’s Galdiano tied for the lead
UCLA junior Mariel Galdiano shot a tournament-best 4-under 68 in Tuesday’s second round to earn a share of the lead with sophomore teammate Patty Tavatanakit entering today’s final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Col.
Galdiano, a 2016 Punahou alumna, caught fire down the stretch Tuesday with three birdies in a row over her final four holes.
She made seven birdies total, including on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 after a bogey on the par-4 14th, and closed with a par on the par-5 18th to tie Tavatanakit, who made four birdies and two bogeys.
Galdiano is playing her second tournament since she made the All-Pac-12 first team as a sophomore with five top-10 finishes, including two runners-up. She was named a second-team All-American by Golfweek.
