Chaminade sophomore Beau Larsen became the first male Chaminade runner to capture first-place honors at a cross country event, winning the UH Hilo Invitational at the Naniloa Banyan Golf Course.
Larsen won the 8k race with a time of 28.38.0, nearly 16 seconds ahead of second-place Joseph Chagoya of Hawaii Pacific. As a team, Chaminade finished second with 39 points. HPU was first with 20.
On the women’s side, HPU’s Jessica Suriano was the top individual finisher with a time of 24:17.6. The Sharks also won the event with 18 total points.
Australia’s Callinan wins in Portugal
Ryan Callinan of Australia edged Japan’s Kanoa Igarashi to win the QS10,000 EDP Billabong Pro Ericeira in Raia De Ribeira D’ilhas, Ericeira, Portugal.
Heading into his final wave, Callinan trailed Igarashi after Igarashi posted a round-high score of 8.17 to take the lead. But on his last wave, Callinan posted a 7.83 to take back the lead and claim the win.
In the semifinals, Igarashi knocked out Hawaii’s Tanner Hendrickson by a score of 13.90 to 13.37.
HPU volleyball breezes to easy win
The Hawaii Pacific women’s volleyball team dominated Holy Names in a 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 sweep at James Castle Gym at St. Andrew’s Priory.
Camryn Collie led the Sharks (4-10, 3-5 PacWest) with 10 kills and 11 digs. The Sharks also held the Hawks (3-11, 2-6), to a -.033 attack percentage in the match.
Chaminade beats Hilo in overtime
The Chaminade men’s soccer team got a goal from Jamin Fonseca just 43 seconds into overtime, as the Silverswords edged the Vulcans 1-0 at Hilo.
Fonseca volleyed in the goal off a pass from Noah Mokulehua. The win for the Silverswords (2-2, 1-1) came in spite of Hilo (1-6, 0-3) having a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks. The Silverswords were able to have a 5-4 lead in total shots.
