The longest home-field win streak in the OIA has come to an end.
No. 4 Mililani made certain of it with a 38-10 victory over No. 2 Kahuku on Saturday night, ending the Red Raiders’ amazing 51-game win streak at Carleton E. Weimer Field. Kahuku hadn’t lost on its turf since Oct. 26, 2007, when Kapolei upset the home team 14-7 in the OIA playoffs.
Mililani improved to 4-0 in OIA Open play (6-2 overall), handing Kahuku (4-2, 1-1) its first loss in league action. The Trojans defense was stellar, limiting Kahuku to 133 total yards in the first half en route to a 17-3 lead.
A 79-yard fumble return by defensive tackle Mykah Tuiolemotu stymied a key Kahuku drive during the second quarter.
“They’re pretty intense. Everyone was going at it. It was good fun,” the 5-foot-10, 225-pound senior said.
His big return didn’t lead to points. A bad snap on a field-goal try bailed out Kahuku.
The Red Raiders cut the lead to 17-3 by halftime, and were within 24-10 after a smooth fake-pitch and run for 55 yards to pay dirt by quarterback Robbie Sauvao with 7:39 left in the third quarter.
Kahuku threatened to score moments later and was at the Mililani 19-yard line. But the wet conditions led to a bad snap by the home team, and the Red Raiders couldn’t overcome a 17-yard loss.
Mililani then drove 64 yards in 11 plays, scoring on Kilifi Malepeai’s second TD, a 2-yard burst. That opened the lead to 31-10 with 11:05 left.
Dillon Gabriel was on point once again. He directed the Mililani offense to 351 total yards against one of the state’s top defensive units. After breaking the all-time career passing mark last week, the senior passed for 312 yards and two touchdowns against Kahuku on 31-for-47 passing.
Even with the win, however, Trojans coach Rod York kept things in perspective.
“We had to play a perfect game and we did. The defense played their ‘A’ game. They got turnovers for us and kept them out of the end zone for the most part,” York said. “But it doesn’t matter. It’s just regular season. (Kahuku) is missing guys, they have a new offensive coordinator. They’re not the same team Saint Louis faced.”
Mililani rushed for just 31 yards, but 250-pound rusher Malepeai scored three TDs among his 48 rushing yards.
