It was interesting to contrast Jim Wolery’s letter regarding U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono’s comments (“Hirono’s comments an embarrassment,” Star-Advertiser, Letters, Sept. 21), with the article on the back page about the slayings of female athletes (“Slayings bring female athletes’ safety to light,” Star-Advertiser, Sept. 21). The latter ends by saying that “the issue is less about women learning to protect themselves and more about changing the dialogue about women being objectified.”
Hirono apparently directed her remarks to all the men in the country (and to be sure, the way men have treated women cuts across the entire political spectrum) to shut up and step up because we have no idea of how many (if not most) women have to constantly be aware of possibly falling victim to a man’s actions. Perhaps Wolery should take the suggestion to shut up to heart.
Kavanaugh likely will be given a pass because the alleged incident occurred so long ago and he was a typical 17-year-old. Does that make it okay? Apparently with the men in power it would be.
