As a youngster, I always was taught to look both ways before crossing the street.
Yes, we now have a crosswalk law that should protect our people when entering a crosswalk. But Hawaii residents have taken it a step further and now believe they are entitled to walk the streets of our islands uninhibited and with total disregard for our drivers.
On a daily basis, pedestrians will cross a street without looking because they know they have the right to cross the street in a crosswalk. Or do they? Let’s not forget, it is against the law to enter a crosswalk once the red warning lights start to flash.
Our senior citizens are especially guilty of this and, for whatever reason, are the very ones who get hurt the most.
We need more public awareness to remind pedestrians what they should have been taught at an early age: Always look both ways before crossing the street.
