  • HAIR TODAY, GONE TOMORROW: A priest prayed over used combs at Kushida Shrine in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, Japan, on Sept. 4, as part of a memorial service for old combs that are no longer used. Sept. 4 is known as the day of combs, as nine and four can be read “kushi” in Japanese, the same word for “comb.” About 420 past-their-prime combs, some with broken teeth that had been used at beauty salons, were offered during the annual event, which started in 1996.
