Hawaii island police have charged a man who was wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting a student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo last week.
Daniel Brooks, 26, who has no permanent address, was arrested in downtown Hilo at about 10 a.m. Saturday and charged later that day with fourth-degree sexual assault. His bail was set at $500, which he was unable to post, police said.
On Friday, police released a photo from surveillance video of a possible suspect in the sexual assault, which allegedly happened Thursday night.
Police said officers responded to the campus at about 8 p.m. Thursday and discovered a woman reported to campus security that an unknown man had accosted her in a restroom on campus about a half-hour earlier.
Police ID man who died in 3-vehicle crash
Hawaii island police identified the 25-year-old man who died following a three-vehicle collision Saturday as John Krasovskiy of Ninole.
Police responded to a 3:40 p.m. call Saturday, and determined that a 2008 Nissan sedan traveling south near the 17-mile marker of Highway 190 in Kailua-Kona hydroplaned into the oncoming lane, sideswiped a 2016 Toyota pickup truck, then collided head-on into a 2011 Peterbilt tanker truck.
Krasovskiy, the driver of the Nissan sedan, was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. Two other occupants of the Nissan were also taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
Three occupants in the Toyota pickup truck and the driver of the tanker truck were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
This is the 25th traffic fatality on Hawaii island this year, police said, compared with 26 at the same time last year.
Maui
Firefighters rescue 24 from rising waters
Maui firefighters made three rescues throughout the Valley Isle on Sunday afternoon, due mostly to quickly rising waters.
At about 12:21 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were dispatched to the blowhole area at Nakalele after a 34-year-old male visitor injured his left wrist and ankle in a fall. Rescue personnel hiked down to the injured male, treated his injuries and airlifted him to awaiting medics.
About 20 minutes later, firefighters responded to a report of nine people trapped at Swinging Bridges in Waihee Valley due to a quickly-rising stream. After hiking to the area, firefighters found the nine Maui residents on the other side of the stream who were unable to cross the bridge because it had been washed out. An Air 1 helicopter transported the nine residents to safety. No injuries were reported.
At about 1:23 p.m., firefighters responded to another call of 14 residents and two visitors trapped by a quick-rising river at Kepaniwai Park in Iao Valley. They were airlifted to safety.
No injuries were reported.
