Federal funding will help improve the Ala Wai Canal and watershed to reduce flood risks in the area. In August, the canal was filled with brown water from runoff in the streams that feed it.

Thanks to U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz and Congress for the $212 million allocated to improve the Ala Wai Canal and its vast watershed of six streams flowing eventually into the Pacific Ocean (“U.S. Senate approves more than $200M for Ala Wai Canal improvements,” Star-Advertiser, Top News, Oct. 10).
This should not only help protect against major flooding in Waikiki but help keep our beaches safe against unnecessary contamination and pollution.
This is good news for the thousands visiting Waikiki and its nearby beaches.
