‘Iolani made it through the semifinals with little pain, but now the momentous test awaits.
The unseeded Raiders cruised to a 25-17, 25-20, 25-14 victory over second-seeded Mililani on Friday night in the Division I semifinals of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Girls Volleyball State Championships.
Up next, the arch rival Kamehameha Warriors in the championship match tonight at 7 at Blaisdell Arena. In the previous two seasons, the Warriors (2017) and Raiders (2016) have each won the finale against each other. This is a rubber match of sorts, even though Kamehameha dominated so far this season with four victories in five head-to-head matches.
“The bottom line is we gotta play good volleyball,” ‘Iolani coach Kainoa Obrey said. “Kamehameha is a really good team. They’re going to be prepared. I feel like we’ll be prepared. The cool thing is not only do we have the top teams in the state going after it, but two of the Top 10 teams in the country. Kamehameha is No. 8 and we’re No. 8 (in the USA Today Super 25). I encourage everyone to come down. It should be a great match.”
When asked what ‘Iolani has to do to bring the same magic the Raiders had to wrap up the title in 2016, libero Grace Wee said, “I was a sophomore on that team. That was a crazy experience winning that. I have a bunch of close friends that were on that team. Those seniors set a huge example for us — the determination and mentality you need to win that type of game.”
Wee, who had eight digs against Mililani, went on to say that a win over Kamehameha is possible if ‘Iolani’s cultivation of the school’s famed “one team” spirit comes to its complete fruition.
It won’t be easy. The ILH champion and top-seeded Warriors (14-1), who are ranked No. 1 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser Top 10, dispatched Kahuku in the other semifinal at McKinley on Friday night. They have won 21 state championships and are going for their fourth crown in the past six years.
Elena Oglivie was a powerhouse once again for the Raiders (12-5), with 15 kills and 17 digs. She hit .324 on 37 swings. ‘Iolani, which is ranked No. 2 in the Top 10, also got five aces, eight digs and four block assists from Mokihana Tufono, nine kills from Izzy Sakoda, and four kills from Sasha Petticord, who was also in on five blocks. Kristen McDaniel came through with 29 assists.
For Mililani, Falanika Danielson put down nine kills and had 13 digs, Aysia Miller added eight kills with 23 assists, and Mariah Fukumoto dug up 20 balls.
“We tried our best through it all,” said Trojans freshman Aria Miller, who had four kills. “We worked as one. For me, I learned so much from the seniors. It was an amazing experience as a freshman and a great opportunity to play in the state tournament.”
In the first set, Oglivie supplied the last three kills to close it out. The Trojans led through the early going of the second set, but ‘Iolani wiped out a 14-11 deficit with a six-point run and a 17-14 edge fueled by two aces from Tufono. In the third, ‘Iolani poured it on after a 9-9 tie.
Kamehameha 3, Kahuku 0
The top-seeded Warriors (14-1) will be going for their 22nd state title and fourth in the past six years tonight in the finale against ‘Iolani after a 25-16, 25-23, 25-9 sweep of the Red Raiders in the late semifinal at the McKinley gym.
Keonilei Akana knocked down 13 kills and had eight digs to lead the way for Kamehameha. Braelyn Akana was in on four blocks, and Lexis Akeo delivered 32 assists and 11 digs.
Mary Fonoimoana led unseeded Kahuku (14-3) in kills with seven. Jannie Blake had 10 digs, and Keau Kamakeeaina contributed 15 assists.
The Warriors hit .233 to the Red Raiders’ .000. Kahuku falls into the consolation bracket.
