Hawaii Hilo’s Jared Kinoshita tied a school record with a 7-under-par 65 and sits atop the leaderboard after Monday’s first round of the Dennis Rose Intercollegiate men’s golf tournament at Waikoloa Kings’ Course.
Kinoshita, a senior from Bakersfield, Calif., tied the school mark set by Nick Mason, who accomplished the feat during the 2003-04 season at the Stanislaus State Invitational.
Western Washington’s Michael Butler and Isaiah Aguirre are tied for second at 68. Eight golfers are tied for fourth at 70.
The Vulcans are tied for second with Sonoma State at 6-under 282. Western Washington leads at 280. Chaminade is 14th at 311 and Hawaii Pacific is 15th and last at 314.
>> The University of Hawaii men’s golf team shot a 3-under-par 285 and moved up three spots to 17th after Monday’s second round of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Princeville, Kauai.
The Rainbow Warriors are at 8-over 584 in the 20-team tournament at Makai Golf Club at Princeville. Pepperdine leads at 557 and is followed by Missouri (561) and Sam Houston State (564).
Hawaii’s top golfer is Justin Arcano, who is tied for 23rd at 2-under 142.
McNeese State’s Blake Elliott leads at 131.
UH volleyball moves up to 61 in RPI
A split of its Big West matches last week led to Hawaii’s highest figure of the season in NCAA Women’s Volleyball Ratings Percentage Index.
The Rainbow Wahine (14-7, 10-2 Big West) jumped to 61 in Monday’s computer-generated ratings, up from last week’s 75. The RPI rates a team’s strength of schedule, using a formula based on a team’s record, the record of its opponents and the record of the opponents’ opponents. It is used for NCAA tournament selection and seeding.
Chaminade’s Bell, UHH pair honored
Chaminade middle blocker Brooke Bell was named PacWest volleyball player of the week, the conference announced Monday.
Bell, a 6-foot-2 senior from Escondido, Calif., hit a combined .604 as the Sharks completed a 3-0 road trip.
She had 11 kills on 12 swings against Holy Names on Oct. 23, 10 kills against Notre Dame de Namur on Thursday and 10 more kills versus Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
>> Hawaii Hilo’s Aston Jessee was voted PacWest defender of the week and Alexandria Parisian was the freshman of the week.
Jessee, a sophomore from Anchorage, Alaska, had 31 total blocks as the Vulcans completed a 3-0 road trip.
Parisian, of Apple Valley, Calif., recorded 35 kills and hit .310 for the week.
Vulcans men’s soccer tops Dominican
Devan Yoshimura, Matt Wilkinson and Curtis Walker scored as the Hawaii Hilo men’s soccer team beat Dominican 3-2 on Monday in San Rafael, Calif.
Yoshimura tied it at 1 at 11:03, Wilkinson tied it again at 33:02 and Walker had the go-ahead score at 46:45.
The Vulcans improved to 4-10, 3-6 PacWest, while the Penguins dropped to 5-9-2, 2-6-1.
>> Noah Mokulehua scored at 55:18 off an assist from Tyler Ebisuya as the Chaminade men beat Academy of Art 1-0 in San Francisco.
Michael Stafford made 10 saves for the Silverswords (5-5-2, 4-4-2 PacWest). The Urban Knights fell to 2-13-2, 1-8-1.
>> Jodi Lillie scored at 36:26 and Jaimie Salas added a goal at 85:36 as the Hawaii Hilo women defeated Dominican 2-0.
Bailey Cahill made five saves for the Vulcans (8-4-2, 5-3-1 PacWest). The Penguins fell to 6-8-2, 3-5-1.
