Hawaii basketball coach Eran Ganot has identified his starters.
What remains unsettled is the Rainbow Warriors’ lineup for Friday’s exhibition against Hawaii Pacific at the Stan Sheriff Center. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
Following this summer’s four-game Australian tour and four weeks of fall training, Ganot has set starters for specific lineups. Do the ’Bows use two point guards in the same backcourt? Or a three-guard attack? Or a traditional 5 (center) in an old-school lineup?
“There are different lineups and combinations we can use,” Ganot said. “I know there are guys who have secured some spots. There are other (positions) that are still up for battle. There should be. We haven’t even played an exhibition game.”
It appears a new-look Zigmars Raimo is set in most lineups. Raimo lost 15 pounds — he now weighs 227 on a 6-foot-8 frame — while maintaining a hunger for rebounds. In the Green-White scrimmage two weeks ago, Raimo collected 13 rebounds, including nine off the offensive glass.
“Zigmars has had such a good offseason and preseason,” Ganot said. “He’s pretty much secured a spot. Zigmars will be starting at this point.”
Ganot said Raimo and 7-foot freshman Mate Colina, who redshirted in the spring after enrolling at UH in January, could be paired on the front line. The ’Bows also could go with a smaller lineup, using Raimo at the 5, with Jack Purchase as the power forward/stretch-4.
Ganot has praised the joint leadership of point guards Brocke Stepteau and Drew Buggs. Stepteau is a senior who can slash or drain 3s. Buggs, at 6-3, can be used on post-up moves. Ganot said he envisions scenarios in which Stepteau and Buggs are in the same lineup. As a twist, another guard — Sheriff Drammeh or sharpshooter Eddie Stansberry — can be added to the mix to create a three-guard attack. Stansberry, a transfer from City College of San Francisco, buried seven of nine shots from behind the 3-point arc in the Green-White scrimmage.
Ganot has praised the development of wings Samuta Avea and Brandon Thomas. “Samuta has improved to a guy you can play more at the 3,” Ganot said. “We could go small at the 4, and play Samuta at the 4 sometimes.”
Whatever combination, the ’Bows are looking to accelerate the tempo, share the basketball, and create spacing, which will widen the lanes for drives.
“At the end of the day, the game is supposed to be fun to watch,” Ganot said. “It’s like an art. … I love passing. I think playing inside-out, having extra passing situations, that’s how I want to play.”
Rainbow Wahine exhibition tonight
The UH women’s basketball team holds its preseason exhibition today at 7 p.m. against Hawaii Hilo at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Seventh-year coach Laura Beeman lost All-Big West first-teamer Sarah Toeaina, the No. 9 scorer in program history, from last year’s 12-18 (5-11 Big West) team.
UH turns to forward Kenna Woodfolk, wing Lahni Salanoa and guard Julissa Tago to pick up the scoring slack, while point guard Tia Kanoa still runs the show when healthy.
Division II Hilo, under David Kaneshiro, went 7-16 (5-15 PacWest) last season.
