I strongly endorse Colin Moore’s call for the publication of an official state voters’ guide (“Hawaii needs official voters’ guide,” Star-Advertiser, Island Voices, Oct. 30).
I spent many years working in Seattle before returning to Honolulu this summer, and without a voters’ guide I feel like a blindfolded person in a maze.
Washington state guides let all candidates submit a statement, enabling the voter to compare their positions side-by-side. Initiatives feature both a “pro” and a “con” argument, written respectively by the proponents and opponents of the measure.
Wringing our hands over Hawaii’s abysmally low voter participation, while denying the electorate the same access to objective information that other Western states routinely provide, makes no sense.
If we genuinely believe in the democratic process and good government, this is a no-brainer.
