Pacific West Conference runner-up Hawaii Hilo had three players on the first team and eight other players from Hawaii schools were selected to the all-conference women’s soccer teams.
Vulcans named to the first team were senior midfielder Tiera Arakawa (King Kekaulike), freshman forward Jodi Lillie (Mililani) and senior defender Lucy Maino from New Zealand. UHH also had two on the second team in senior forward Jaimie Salas from Arizona and junior keeper Bailey Cahill from California.
Chaminade sophomore forward Randi Fontes (Pearl City), a transfer from the University of Hawaii, was named to the third team.
5 named to all-PacWest third team
Four players from Chaminade and one from Hawaii Hilo were named to the third team of the all-PacWest men’s soccer teams on Wednesday.
Selected from the Silverswords were freshman forward Noah Mokulehua (Kaiser), freshman defender Tasman Turner (‘Iolani), junior goalie Michael Stafford (Kalani) and junior defender Curtis Coburn from Huntington Beach, Calif. It was the second all-conference honor for Coburn, who helped Chaminade to its first winning season (6-5-2).
Also named to the third team was UH Hilo junior forward Matt Wilkinson from England.
Kailua graduate Naia Graham, a senior forward for Notre Dame de Namur, earned second-team honors.
Hilo victorious on Senior Night
The Hawaii Hilo women’s volleyball team defeated Fresno Pacific 25-15, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, sending its four seniors out winners.
Bria Beale had a match-high 20 kills and added 15 digs and Ashton Jessee had 11 kills and nine blocks to lead the Vulcans (20-6, 16-4 PacWest). Carly Bock had 15 kills and Madison Pierce added 13 for Fresno Pacific (7-22, 6-14 PacWest).
The game was the final home match for defensive specialist Mina Grant, opposite hitter Evelin Solyomvari, middle blocker Kiley Davis and setter Basia Sauni.
Swords up to No. 7 in regional rankings
The Chaminade women’s volleyball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in the latest NCAA West Region rankings released on Wednesday.
The Silverswords, seeking their first NCAA tournament bid since 2004, are 21-5 overall and 15-5 in the PacWest. Chaminade finishes out the regular season hosting Fresno Pacific on Friday and Hawaii Hilo on Saturday in 7 p.m. matches in McCabe Gym.
The top eight teams in the regional rankings advance to the NCAA West Regional, which will be held at a host site next week. The field will be announced Sunday on NCAA.com.
USTA sportsmanship award to Abarca
Hawaii’s Marlon Abarca Jr. received one of the two Sportsmanship Awards in the advanced division of last week’s 14U Junior Team Tennis tournament in Orlando, Fla.
Abarca’s Slamming Acers finished 12th, losing to Hawaii Pacific region rival Team Huaka’i in the Gator Flight at the USTA National Campus. A third 14U team from Honolulu, Team BTC, finished fifth in the intermediate division.
Kaneohe second at USTA nationals
Kaneohe finished second at last month’s USTA League Adult 55 & Over 9.0 National Championships in Orlando, Fla.
The USTA-Hawaii Section team lost 2-1 to Plano, Texas, in the final played at the USTA National Campus. Members of the team are Anna Hinkley (captain), Jeannette Bean, Loreen Hirano, Marie Imanaka, Jennifer Kelley, Stacey Panui, Rhonda Ching, Luanne Apo and Lorie Robertson.
Masuda finishes 12th at Nanea
The University of Hawaii’s Kaci Masuda carded her second-straight 2-over 73 on the final day of the Nanea Pac-12 Preview in Kailua-Kona.
Masuda finished the tournament at 10-over 229 and in 44th place. Masuda was the top finisher for Hawaii, which finished 12th as a team at 940.
Arizona was the team winner, finishing with an 874 total. Arizona’s Yu-Sang Hou and Oregon’s Tze-Han Lin shared first place honors at 6-under 213.
