Hawaii’s Finn McGill, Elijah Gates and Makai McNamara each won their Round 1 heats in the 2018 Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, earning berths into the next round.
Mason Ho, Benji Brand, Torrey Meister, Shayden Pacarro and Noa Mizuno also advanced by finishing second in their heats.
The event continues today, surf permitting.
HPU’s Hippolite earns freshman honor
Hawaii Pacific guard Lauryn Hippolite was named the PacWest Conference women’s basketball co-freshman of the week on Monday.
In her collegiate debut, the 5-foot-7 freshman logged 11 points and three rebounds against CSU San Marcos, then followed with 12 points, five rebounds and a steal against UC San Diego.
Hilo’s Jessee named defender of the week
Hawaii Hilo middle blocker Ashton Jessee was named the PacWest Conference volleyball defender of the week on Monday.
Jessee also won the award on Oct. 29.
Jessee posted one solo block and eight block assists against Fresno Pacific, four block assists against Hawaii Pacific and seven blocks against Chaminade, finishing the week with 20 blocks.
Handy named player of the week
Chaminade’s Alana Handy was named the season’s final PacWest volleyball player of the week on Monday.
Handy posted double-doubles in her final two matches of the regular season. The junior tallied 11 kills and 12 digs against Fresno Pacific, then posted 18 kills and 19 digs against Hawaii Hilo.
