Tobacco use by adults around children did not become a priority until later in my career as a school counselor. After retirement, I was able to testify before the City Council regarding tobacco use in motor vehicles. Highlights of that testimony include:
>> The effects of secondhand smoke on school attendance, leading to lower grades when coupled with rising academic standards.
>> Teenagers choosing not to live at home, or running away, due to subsequent health issues or the inability to tolerate the stench in various family settings.
>> The cultural implications and frustration for children who cannot enjoy the fragrances of the aina because their senses have been compromised.
Credit the Council for choosing the welfare of children over what some called government overreach. This measure helps our keiki’s health, academics and relationships.
