On Nov. 14, the City Council met to discuss raising bus fares. The proposed rate changes went from logical to obscene.
The single-ride fare is currently $2.75 — often $3, as no change is given — so the proposed $3 fare is logical.
What is obscene is the proposed senior annual pass fare — more than three times higher than the current annual cost of $35. Granted, $35 is rather low, but the proposed $120 is ridiculous. May I suggest $50 or $60?
Will the Council guarantee that Social Security checks will go up? Or even just state pensions? Or that rents and food prices won’t go up? And what happens to two-year passes that were bought in good faith, will they be valid?
Are Council members simply hoping to keep us off their buses — which they don’t ride at any price?
