After sitting out the 2017-18 winter big-wave season due to sponsorship-related snags, “The Eddie” is back. Twenty-nine top surfers tapped for the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational Surf Contest will assemble for an opening ceremony set for Thursday afternoon at Waimea Bay. And if this week’s North Shore swell is followed by more of the same, the holding period, which starts Saturday, could see competition-contending waves from the get-go.
Since its inception in 1984, the legendary event has been held only when the surf heights at Waimea are consistently forecast at 20 feet or higher. John John Florence won “The Eddie” in its ninth-ever staging in February 2016.
UH sports teams just keep going
Cheers of “Go ’Bows!” will happily roar in this postseason — for both the flagship football team as well as the Wahine volleyball squad.
All indications are that the football Warriors should and will be tapped for the Hawaii Bowl on Dec. 22, after they pulled off a thrilling OT win against San Diego State on Saturday.
Then there’s the Wahine volleyball team, to play in its 26th consecutive NCAA volleyball tournament: on Thursday against Baylor in the subregional hosted by 15th-seeded Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
From the UH fans: Kudos to all the players, coaches and support staff.
