Although President George H.W. Bush was a great man by any measure, the opening paragraph in Adam Nagourney’s story from The New York Times chose to focus on Bush’s being denied a second term, noting his “seeming inattention to domestic affairs” (“41st president’s standing rose after tenure,” Star-Advertiser, Dec. 1).
Bush also was the youngest bomber pilot in World War II, shot down during an attack on Chichi Jima, rescued at sea by a U.S. submarine, and eventually awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and three air medals.
He was the last American president to serve in combat, completing 58 air missions. And that was the beginning of an American hero’s life.
