A 71-year-old California man has died after he was found unresponsive in waters off of Maui.

He has been identified as Darryl Malquist of Wisconsin.

Maui firefighters responded to a report of a possible drowning at approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday in waters on the north end of Maluaka Beach in Makena, according to a news release from Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro of the Maui Fire Department.

The man was reportedly snorkeling with his wife when at some point she noticed he was unresponsive.

The wife immediately called for help. Bystanders brought him to shore and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation until fire rescue and lifeguard arrived and continued lifesaving efforts.

Yatsushiro said medics arrived and pronounced him dead at the scene.
