Lt. Gov. Josh Green has rolled up his sleeves and begun to build his team. He hired a new chief of staff, Brooke Wilson, who previously worked for the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters — the organization that spent $1 million through its super PAC to support Green’s candidacy. He also hired attorney Jeremy Lakin, who has a health-care industry background, as deputy chief of staff; and J.P Schmidt, the former state insurance commissioner under Gov. Linda Lingle, as a senior policy adviser.
He’s been in office only a couple of days, but it looks like Green will hit the ground running — with an eye to 2022.
More Biki bikes, so be more careful out there
Four years ago, when the city’s then-controversial King Street bike lane opened in December, it was unclear whether the two-mile “Cycle Track” — Oahu’s first protected bike lane — would increase bicycle ridership. Clearly, it has. And with the recent expansion of Bikeshare Hawaii’s “Biki Stops,” we can expect to see a lot more pedaling in Honolulu’s urban core.
Thirty-three new docking areas are at Iwilei, Makiki and the University of Hawaii-Manoa. With the additional inventory, Bikeshare Hawaii offers 133 stops, from downtown to Diamond Head, and 1,300 turquoise bikes. Now would be a good time for Honolulu Hale to install more protected bike lanes.
