A 70-year-old man has died after he was struck by a pickup truck in Kailua-Kona Wednesday night.
Positive identification is pending.
Police said a 2007 Toyota pickup truck operated by a 36-year-old Kailua-Kona man was traveling south on Ane Keohokalole Highway at the intersection of Manawalea Street when the vehicle struck the pedestrian shortly before 6:15 p.m.
The pedestrian, also of Kailua-Kona, sustained critical injuries in the crash and was taken to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was not in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, police said.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.
Police said the Toyota pickup driver was not injured.
Speed and alcohol were not factors.
This is the 29th traffic-related fatality on Hawaii island compared to 31 at the same time last year.
The Hawaii Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit has initiated a negligent homicide investigation. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call officer Justin Hooser at 326-4646.
