The reality of end-of-life choices are traumatic and complex. Recent letters and the controversy between the residents of Kahala Nui and the Catholic Church over physician-assisted dying are examples.
However, from my perspective, the differences and difficulties can be overcome. It really is a matter of personal choice. Religion can guide a person’s deliberation but not force a decision one way or the other.
As a culture, Americans have an unreasonable fear of death. At the end of a long, full life, death shouldn’t be viewed as an enemy to be beaten but a friend to be embraced. Because life is good we mourn its passing, but death also can be a beautiful experience. A peaceful death is a sacred part of life and shouldn’t be feared.
When death is imminent and suffering is great, the end of life is a blessing and a time to celebrate. Live well and die well.
