Like many residents of the 50th State, I tuned in Saturday hoping to witness yet another local boy win a Heisman Trophy.
They did not announce Tua Tagovailoa’s name, but Hawaii may have won after all. Leading up to the big moment, it was impressive to hear Tagovailoa heap praise on the two players who were vying for the same award.
When Kyler Murray’s name was announced, they cut to a gathering at St. Louis High School that showed the fans there immediately clapping, no boos, no demonstrations of dejection. For a moment I thought I heard the wrong name.
As the winner approached the podium, Tagovailoa could be seen clapping away with the most sincere smile. This Heisman event and the way the coaches and winners of the recent Little League World Series behaved should have us all celebrating the exemplary sportsmanship shown by all.
