The film “Moana” and the first book in the Harry Potter series — both big hits with the keiki crowd — may now be screened and read, respectively, in olelo Hawaii. Thanks to a yearlong production effort, involving the translation of some 10,000 words, the Hawaiian-language version of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ film is now slated for free distribution in DVD format to accredited schools statewide.
And thanks to a muggle (“makala”) at the University of Hawaii, Richard Keao NeSmith, “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is now available as “Harry Potter a me ka Pohaku Akeakamai.” NeSmith, who has translated various other youth-focused texts, including J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit (Ka Hopita),” plans to tackle the rest of the Potter series.
At 88, he finishes 26 in 18
Victory can be defined in many ways. The top finishers in Sunday’s Honolulu Marathon surely feel like winners, as they should.
But sometimes “winning” can be measured by the runner’s perseverance. Sadao Ito, 88, was the last to finish, and did so alone, after 18 hours. First of all, this is a man who has lived for 88 years, no small accomplishment in itself. The fact that he did so and still saw a 26-mile run as something within his grasp? That’s inspirational. Congratulations, Mr. Ito.
